Home/Buyer’s Guide

Take your time. We did.

Make the right call. The first time.

Four bikes. Three frame styles. Two e-bike classes. One workshop. We put together everything a first-time retro-e-bike buyer needs — from sizing to laws to shipping — so you can ride away with the right bike, not the runner-up.

Step 01 · Find your bike

Three questions. One recommendation.

Answer three quick questions about how you’ll ride. We’ll point you at the bike in the lineup that’s right for the riding you actually do — not the riding you imagine you’ll do.

01 · Roads

Where do you ride most?

Not a sales tool.

We’d rather you buy the right one.

If our recommendation doesn’t feel like you, the wrong one’s still here for the talking. Hop into the comparison table below, or call the workshop — a real person who’s ridden every model picks up the phone.

Step 02 · Compare

The whole lineup, side by side.

Same DNA — Bafang motors, Shimano gearing, aircraft-aluminum frames. The differences live in the geometry, the saddle, and where each bike likes to be ridden.

Step 03 · Sizing & fit

Get the geometry right.

Three measurements decide whether a bike feels like an extension of you or a piece of furniture. Stand against a wall in your riding shoes and take five minutes — it’s worth doing properly.

A · Standover heightB · InseamC · Reach
Rider HeightInseamBest fit
5′0″ – 5′4″27″ – 29″Ponyboy
5′2″ – 5′8″28″ – 31″Vacay Lo-Step
5′6″ – 5′10″30″ – 32″Greaser · Vacay Hi-Step
5′9″ – 6′1″31″ – 34″Greaser · Outsider
6′0″ – 6′4″33″ – 36″Outsider 5.0

Not sure where you land? Stand flat-footed against a wall in your riding shoes. Measure floor to crotch — that’s your inseam. Add 1.5″ for clearance, and that’s the maximum standover you want.

Still on the fence? Book a 30-minute fit appointment at the Calgary showroom — free, no commitment.

Step 04 · Range & battery

The honest math on how far you’ll actually get.

Marketing range numbers are measured in laboratory conditions by a 150-pound test rider riding in a straight line on flat pavement at half the assist level. Real life isn’t that. Here’s how to read the numbers.

01

Battery capacity (Wh)

Watt-hours is the only number that matters when comparing batteries. Multiply volts × amp-hours: the standard 48V 13Ah pack is 624 Wh — fitted across Greaser Classic / Springer, Outsider 4.0, Vacay, and Ponyboy. The 48V 17.5Ah pack (Greaser Limited, Outsider 5.0, Outsider MX) is 840 Wh, about 35% more range. The Outsider 5.0 can be optioned with an extended 48V 20Ah pack — 960 Wh.

02

Your weight & cargo

Add 50 lb to the rider and range drops about 10%. Two passengers' worth of groceries in panniers, another 5%. Headwind, hills, cold weather, fat tires — they all draw more current. Plan conservatively.

03

Assist level & throttle

Pedal-assist Level 1 sips. Level 5 chugs. Throttle-only riding (Class 2) is the most demanding mode — expect to halve the advertised range if you never pedal. Most owners ride at Level 2–3 and pedal lightly.

Realistic range calculator

Drag the sliders.

Adjust the variables to your reality. The number you’ll see is the range our service team would quote you on the phone — not the marketing number.

Step 05 · The Rules

What’s street legal — and what isn’t.

E-bike laws look complicated but break down into three classes that decide where you can ride. None of our bikes require a licence, registration, or insurance — but bike-path access varies by city.

I

Class 1

Pedal-assist only

20 mph maxNo throttle

Motor assists only while you’re pedalling. The most permissive class — legal on essentially every multi-use trail in North America.

  • Roads, bike lanes, multi-use trails
  • Some mountain-bike trails (region-dependent)
  • No licence · no registration · no insurance
The Ponyboy is Class 1
III

Class 3

Faster pedal-assist

28 mph maxUS only

Pedal-assist up to 28 mph; throttle (if present) still capped at 20 mph. Faster commuting; trade-off is reduced trail access in some jurisdictions. Class 3 is a US classification — not yet recognised in Canada.

  • Roads & bike lanes only in most US states
  • Helmet required in most jurisdictions
  • Minimum age 16 in several states
Outsider 5.0 ships Class 2 default · field-upgradable to Class 3 in US

Step 06 · Ordering

The fine print, up front.

What you should know before you click order — shipping, assembly, payment, returns, and what happens if something on the bike goes wrong in year three.

Free shipping

Every bike ships free across Canada and the continental United States. Crated, insured, tracked. Typical transit: 4–7 business days from Calgary.

How shipping works →

95% assembled

Bikes arrive with the wheels, handlebars, saddle, and pedals to install. All tools included. Most owners finish setup in 30–45 minutes — or any local bike shop will do it for ~$80.

3-year frame warranty

Three years on the frame. Two years on the battery and motor. One year on the controller. The leather saddle has a lifetime craftsmanship guarantee. North American service network — no shipping the bike back to us.

Step 07 · Customise

Make it yours before it ships.

Every bike configurator lets you pick the colourway, saddle, grips, and add-ons before the frame is assembled. A few of the most popular — rear racks, leather panniers, brass headlamps — are pictured here.

Step 08 · Talk to a human

Still on the fence? Don’t decide alone.

The Calgary showroom is where every bike gets test-ridden, dialled in, and prepped for shipping. A real person — usually a rider, sometimes the founder — picks up the phone and answers email. Three ways to talk to us before, during, or after you buy.

Frequently asked

Questions other riders have asked first.

Pulled from the inbox. If yours isn’t here, the workshop line gets you to a person fast.

Which Michael Blast is right for a first-time e-bike rider?

For most first-timers we recommend the Ponyboy or the Vacay Lo-Step. Both have approachable geometry, gentler motor curves, and a lower standover so you can put both feet on the ground at lights. They're also the most forgiving for someone still figuring out the throttle.

Can I test ride before I buy?

Yes. The Calgary showroom keeps a demo of every model — book a 30-minute fitting at the showroom and ride them back to back. If you're not in Calgary, our authorised dealer network covers most of North America; the dealers page lists test-ride locations near you.

What if it arrives and it's the wrong fit?

Thirty-day ride-it-and-decide return policy. Ride the bike, take it on a real commute, do the things you'd actually do. If it isn't right, we issue a return label and refund — including the original shipping. We'd rather take a bike back than have it sit in a garage.

How do I service the bike after I buy it?

Two paths. Any local bike shop can service the mechanical parts — brakes, gears, wheels, headset — because we use industry-standard components throughout. For electronics (motor, battery, controller, display) we have a parts network and a phone diagnostic line; most fixes are done in 48 hours.

How long does the battery last before it needs replacing?

Lithium-ion packs are rated for roughly 800–1,000 full charge cycles before noticeable capacity loss. For a daily commuter that's about five years; for a weekend rider, ten or more. Replacement packs are $499 and slot in without tools.

Can I finance the bike?

NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. We don't currently offer financing. Payment at checkout is by credit or debit card or bank transfer. We're actively working on adding pay-in-4 and longer-term financing options later this year — sign up to the newsletter and we'll let you know the moment it goes live.
